James Brathwaite - Honorary Consul for South Africa in the South East

I am delighted to welcome you to the website of the Honorary Consuls for the Republic of South Africa.

Since 2006 I have had great pleasure in representing the interests of South Africa in the South East Region of the UK, comprising the counties of Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Kent, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. This includes all the major unitary authority areas such as Southampton and Portsmouth, Brighton, Milton Keynes and Medway.

I see my role as being essentially one of fostering links between South Africa and the South East - business links, educational links, cultural links; not only promoting trade and investment, but also enabling these two very different societies to imbibe the best of each other’s cultures and traditions.

Having been responsible for the economy of this region, growing successful partnerships between global economies is my main interest. Also the use of new technologies and Intellectual Properties to create jobs and wealth are a keen interest.

Whilst the office of the Honorary Consul is not an executive one and therefore cannot deal with issues to do with visas, passports, travel, etc, I would welcome any suggestions you might have for strengthening the bonds of friendship and business between South Africa and the South East of England.

James E. Brathwaite CBE
Honorary Consul
